Experience

Summary
The bulk of my experience lies in broadcast news writing. I produced several stories for my college TV station and spent a summer interning with South Dakota Public Radio. I enjoy the creativity that goes along with both mediums, but longform storytelling is my passion--whether that be through video, audio or the written word. I'm especially passionate about covering Native American issues and soft news features.

Resume
Verbatim: A Volante Production
Director
Spring 2015
The Volante, USD's student-run news paper, launched a weekly webshow in the spring semester of 2015. As the production's inaugural director, I was present during the formative production meetings and for each taping. My responsibilities included familiarizing myself with/operating the TriCaster system which controlled virtural camera moves, virtual sets, and other graphics. I also provided feedback on hosts' delivery and trained other team members on my post. I also enjoyed the opportunity to co-host an episode and provide occassional content for the show's most popular segment: The World of USD.
South Dakota Public Broadcasting
Radio Programming Intern
Summer 2014
After listening to the local NPR affiliate while working on homework during my first two years of college, I was thrilled by the opportunity to be SDPB's programming intern for the summer. I spent my shifts editting daily promos, loading them into the NexGen broadcast system, recording afternoon teases, and leveling pre-produced programs to ensure they were optimized for clear broadcast. I was also responsible for calling guests, answering phones and archiving our daily Dakota Midday program. While regular hosts were on vacation, I guest hosted statewide broadcasts of All Things Considered and Morning Edition. I also guest-produced an episode of No Cover, No Minimum Radio and produced a few news stories from Dakota Midday interview clips.
Coyote News - KYOT-TV
Live Correspondent, Director, Tech Director, Reporter
2013 - present
During my two years with USD's student produced weekly newscast, I've experienced nearly every behind-the-scenes position including audio board, studio camera, live camera and teleprompter. However, I've spent the most time directing and tech directing our live show. As director, I gave cues to other members of the crew and coordinated any changes from the producers to conduct the flow of the newscast. As tech director, I took cues from the director to switch camera angles, play graphics and roll stories in real-time.
For the fall of 2014, I auditioned to be on-air talent and received the Live Correspondent position. This position involved scheduling a live interview each week to be held in the student union, half-way across campus from the studio. Because our interviews were not pre-recorded, this position was particularly challenging and required the ability to remain calm and eloquent under pressure and to be quick on my feet.
I have also produced several stories for air during the broadcast as a one-man crew.
The Volante
Columnist, Blogger, Video Preview Producer
2012-2014
Writing columns and blogs for USD's student newspaper gave me a chance to practice more creative, opinion-driven writing while still maintaining the discipline required of weekly deadlines. My topics included challenges of college life, criticism of university curriculum changes and a semester-long fitness blog. One column regarding the state of the Native Studies department in spring 2013 was picked up by Indianz.com.
During the fall semester of 2013, I also used my iPad and iMovie to produce video previews of print stories that were posted on The Volante's website.
